Covid’s Impact on Schengen Visa Applications for Austria & Austria’s Tourism
Tourism is critical to the Austrian economy as it generates 7.3% of value-added. That’s why the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe had a significant impact on the industry.
The spring 2020 lockdown badly affected tourism in the country, with overnight stays falling by almost 100%. However, tourism and travelling recovered over the summer, especially thanks to German tourists.
In October and November 2020, a new COVID-19 wave affected Austria’s tourism sector, as authorities ordered a new lockdown and closed many accommodation establishments and restaurants.
- In 2020, Austria received 45,000 Schengen Visa Applications (86% or 278,000 fewer than in 2019).
